One Month Anniversary

Today marks a big milestone in Sydney. The day that I thought would never come when I first set foot on this continent came and went. Within the last month, I have seen and learned a lot from my new friends and new home—although, I’m not altogether ready to call it home yet. Still looking for housing...

When I first arrived here I constantly thought of the "O" word--Overwhelming. The urban jungle that is Sydney was too much to take in. For one, the city is not on a grid system, therefore the streets intertwine in diagonals and curvilinear paths. I didn't think I could handle the chaos and constant motion of the city, but now I feel more at ease. The hustle and bustle excites me more than stress me out.

I went Carols in the Domain which is an event the city puts on. It's held in the Domain park and you bring a picnic and you sing along to Christmas carols performed by entertainers on the stage. We all got loaded from boxed wine (no glass allowed in the park). Just before Christmas, I went to high tea at the Park Hyatt--very shi-shi-la-la but well worth it. Afterwards we went on a pub crawl and tried to do 12-bars of Christmas. The pictures above of the giant pint glasses are actually urinals at Argyle, one of the bars we hit. We also ran into a pack of coked up elves, as one is depicted in the picture. I also had Kangaroo on a pizza, and I can't say it tastes like chicken...more like roadkill because it's so gamey. I was very lucky and glad to be adopted by Elizabeth and her family over Christmas and Boxing Day. Can I just tell you, having Boxing Day off is such a nice perk.

Thanks to everyone and your well wishes. I miss you all very much. Homesickness has been better in the last two weeks. I think I will make it afterall. While I am still living out of my suitcases, they are not going on a plane anytime soon which is a good sign.
