Dress for Success

I'm starting to see the truth behind the advice, "dress for the job you want." While I'm a pretty low-key, down to earth person (even more so in my old age), I am starting to realize the weight of dress to impress. In Sydney, almost everyone wears a suit, even the street performer playing bass is wearing a pinstriped one. Every day, even in the peak of summer, downtown is flooded in a sea of black. On top of that, most people in the office wear cuff links. I always thought those accessories were kind of mythical, like a unicorn, because I have never seen anyone wear them. I notice myself forming assumptions about people based on their appearances such as this: "He must be smart, he's wearing a suit," or "Wow, he must be important, he's wearing a tie and cuff links." While that is a gross generalization of judging one's worth, the harsh reality is it really doesn't hurt to dress up. Not to mention, everyone looks good in black. Hopefully with time I'll be desensitized to the formal business wear, and perhaps one day understand why so many businessmen wear pink here.

Miss you lots Po. Hang in there! I remember feeling sick to my stomach the first first weeks I was in Europe - alone, at 22 years old. It was so hard...but looking back, it was the BEST thing I ever did. You will feel more comfortable soon.
